Sea state refers to the surface of a large body of water with respect to wind and swell at any given moment. The works consist of large graphite, charcoal and pastel drawings on paper of sea swell. During a visit to Cape Cod, artist Linda Simmel, was inspired by her observation of the patterns left in the sand by waves pulled out to sea.
Tasty: Artists Playing With Food
An All Media Juried Exhibition guest curated by Gayle and Joe Ortiz
October 3 – November 4, 2011
Reception: Saturday, October 1, 5:00-7:00 pm
Food, one of life’s necessities, is the subject for this exhibition. And food as artistic fodder is almost as old as the ritualistic depictions of hunting found in the caves of Lascaux, France. Curated by Santa Cruz culinary luminaries/authors/artists, Gayle and Joe Ortiz, artwork was selected from artists throughout the state. Included are 2 and 3-dimensional works of many varieties with a few “Tasty” surprises thrown in. www.gaylesbakery.com

Without Art
November 14 – December 16, 2011
Reception: Thursday, November 10, 5:00-7:00 pm
(Closed November 11, 24 & 25)
Imagine life without art? The Cabrillo Gallery invited artists, working in all mediums and disciplines, to comment on life without art. In this age of dramatic budget cuts the arts typically suffer the most. The Cabrillo Gallery becomes an austere representation of what life might be like without art of any kind. Numerous events fill the month long exhibition including a “Day Without Art” on Thursday, December 1st, an international observance of the AIDS epidemic and the toll it has taken on the arts community. Donations made during the exhibition will benefit SCAARF, Santa Cruz Artists’ Assistance Relief Fund.
