About Rio Sands Motel...

The Rio Sands is a great lodging on Monterey Bay in Santa Cruz about 100 to 300 steps to the sand, depending on the length of your stride; in the suburb of Aptos. We’re about eight miles to downtown Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and Wharf, and about forty minutes to Monterey and Carmel.

This is Seacliff Beach where you can walk on the sand for miles in either direction, or on the esplanade above. An old, half-sunken cement ship, the Palo Alto, also functions as a wharf for fishing and viewing. From time to time, you’ll see someone on shore pull in a fish, or from knee-deep in the water; many folks sprawl and play on what seems like endless sand and sea.

Adjacent to the beach is a mini-mart, deli, bar and places to eat. The Rio Sands has fifty accommodations with many room types, including family suites, some with bunk beds, many with kitchens, all described in detail under Our Rooms.

We offer a large pool, spa, barbeque and garden areas, and a large and varied continental breakfast in a large and handsome banquet room. See Amenities. Sorry no pets allowed.

We are excited to announce that the Rio Sands Motel will be undergoing a facade facelift. The construction will begin January 3, 2011 through August 1st, 2011. The motel will remain open during the re-model. We promise to do our best to keep your comfort in mind when booking your reservation.
The Sands building in which we have 8 of our nicest guest rooms and our breakfast / conference room will remain unaffected by the remodel and will be open throughout the process. All of of our usual amenities, ie. our spa, swimming pool, BBQ area, breakfast area and garden area will remain unaffected.
This remodel is primarily for guest convince and beautification.The exterior style will be Mediterranean.

Our Rooms

The Rio Sands offers a range of rooms and suite options, great for an extended stay or a weekend getaway.  Each of our rooms is equipped with a microwave, refrigerator, in-room coffee, hair dryer and FREE internet service in rooms..

Standard Rooms
Offered with 1 King or 2 Queen beds, and feature a balcony or patio.  

Junior Suites
2 Queen beds, 1 double sofa bed in a sitting area with a second color television.  Sleeps up to 6.

Kitchen Suites
Feature a separate bedroom with 1 King bed, living room/sitting area and a kitchen stocked with cookware and dishes. Ground floor units have a double sofa bed in the sitting area; second floor units include a couch with a twin rollaway in the sitting area. Suites offer a patio or balcony. Sleeps up to 4.

Family Suites
Two room suite featuring a separate bedroom with twin bunk beds, double sofa bed and a TV. The main room has a King bed, TV, bistro table and chairs, and is adjacent to the fully stocked kitchen with gas stove. Sleeps up to 6.
