About Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County...
The Council was founded in 1979 through a cultural action plan as a private, nonprofit agency, and chronicles a long and successful presence in Santa Cruz County. The Council continues during its 30-year history to uphold its Mission Statement--to lead and advance the Arts by providing funding, advocacy and support to artists and arts organizations. The Cultural Council helps to sustain a thriving, creative and diverse arts community by: providing funding and support services to Artists and Arts Organizations. supporting a wide range of Arts Learning opportunities. advocating for ongoing support for the Arts. leading effective community collaborations and partnerships. communicating both the intrinsic and economic value of the Arts. The passing years have seen the inception and growth of our major programs: Arts in Education and the award-winning SPECTRA Program - In response to the 1979 cultural plan, the Council created SPECTRA, a model arts in education program with 220 workshop, residency, and performance offerings to 59 local public schools. Following the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the Cultural Council administered $640,000 in grants to assist artists and arts organizations in getting back to work. in 1990, the SPECTRA program won the Governor's Award for Excellence in Arts in Education. In 1995 the Council launched SPECTRA Plus, a four-year project in two elementary schools to infuse the curriculum with the arts. The success of this project lead the Packard Foundation to pilot its School Arts Program of grants directly to Santa Cruz County public schools. In 1999 the Cultural Council produced an ethnic arts showcase called the Calabash Awards. With state and federal budget cuts currently aimed at paring arts programs in our county schools, there continues to be a great need for providing children the opportunity for exposure to the arts in all its various forms. The Cultural Council makes this effort a priority. To learn more about Arts Education and SPECTRA, click here. Grantmaking - The Cultural Council applies for, and receives, funding in the form of grants, which are made available to local arts organizations and individuals to assist them in furthering their goals to enrich the arts in our county. Cultural Council's Santa Cruz County Open Studios Art Tours© - An annual event with a 23-year tradition, the Cultural Council brings together the art-appreciating community with artists who open their studios for a peek at the creative process in action. In 1997 the Cultural Council co-hosted the first national conference of managers of Open Studios tours. To learn more about Open Studios, click here. The Cultural Council is a non-profit independent agency governed by a Board of Directors representing the arts, business, education, government, and public service. Funding is diverse, coming from government, foundation, business, individual and educational sources.
